Colombian Coffee; Passion and Dedication in its Cultivation
Coffee production in Colombia has a reputation as the best in the world, producing mild, well balanced coffee beans. Every day, coffee growers throughout Colombia fulfill a family tradition, one that has been passed down from generation to generation. The people of Colombia are the essential ingredient toward fuelling the coffee culture we enjoy today, and growing premium-quality coffee beans – across nearly 2.2 million acres of Colombian highlands – is an important part of their heritage. In fact, coffee growing is the largest source of rural employment in the country. The people of Colombia believe that the family is their most important priority, and are very keen on protecting and maintaining a strong set of family values, and preserving the coffee culture responsible for the economic and social wellbeing of so many Colombians.
Equator Location and Two Harvest Seasons
Colombian coffee is known to be among the best in the world, with a rich, full-bodied, and perfectly balanced taste, and Colombians pride themselves on their reputation for high-quality coffee beans. Colombian coffee is grown at high altitudes and tended to with care in the shade of banana and rubber trees. The rich volcanic soil, in the mountains of Colombia, produce ideal conditions for growing high quality coffee beans. Because the mountainous terrain precludes the possibility of significant mechanization, Colombian coffee is harvested by hand – at its optimal ripeness. Harvesting coffee by hand in Colombia results in, not only a higher-quality product, but also the broader involvement of family-run coffee growing operations in the industry. Due to Colombia’s location to the Equator, many areas actually experience two harvest seasons, rather than one seen in most coffee-growing countries around the world. The alternation of wet and dry seasons supports two harvests, one running from September to December and the other running from April to June… giving the opportunity for coffee cultivation all year long.
Boosting Colombian Consumption
The coffee-farming culture is a pivotal part of Colombian heritage, their rituals are specific, and there is a reverence for coffee. In Colombia, coffee is sacred. The culture of coffee-drinking in Colombia is building momentum, as coffee drinkers in Colombia previously consumed less than half as much coffee as Americans or Brazilians. That is now no longer the case, and the boosting “internal coffee consumption” within Colombia is on the rise. ORGANO™ has become a fundamental force in Colombia and is proud to announce – now available in Colombia; ORGANO™ Gourmet Black Coffee, Gourmet Mocha, Gourmet Latte, Gourmet Hot Chocolate and Black Ice Tea. In addition, when you drink coffee in Colombia, you should know: 1. Black Coffee = Un Tinto, 2. Coffee with milk = Un Café, 3. Coffee with a drop of milk = Un Perico – just to be safe!
Colombian National Coffee Park
The National Coffee Park (Parque Nacional del Café) is a theme park located in the department of Quindio, Colombia. The park can be reached from a cable car, offers attractions such as a global coffee garden, a roller coaster, and food stalls – all based on coffee. The park was founded in 1995 by the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (La Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia) and the Departmental Committee of Coffee Growers of Quindío (El Comité Departamental de Cafeteros del Quindío). It consists of two main areas: by the main entrance are the buildings housing the museum and exhibitions detailing the history, culture and process of growing and producing coffee; and in the valley beyond is an amusement park with rides and shows.
